Scope of Position:

Works under the direction of the President to administer laboratory operations, schedule and facilitate testing activities, promote lab growth, marshal laboratory resources and ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Hires, evaluates, supervises and discharges laboratory staff (one to two employees)
  • Establishes laboratory testing procedures and quality policy as related to UL Witness Test Data Program (WTDP) with goal of compliance to and acceptance into UL Third Party Test Data Program (TPTDP)
  • Conducts training in accordance with said procedures and policy
  • Provides technical direction to laboratory personnel and oversees agency certification testing
  • Confers with research and support staff on the development of project plans
  • Manages laboratory activity according to priorities set by senior Management
  • Reviews test schedules and project deadlines and make decisions concerning inventory, equipment and staffing requirements
  • Monitors testing approach to ensure the finished product meets prescribed requirements
  • Ensures the accurate and timely issuance of test reports and project updates
  • Develops procedures for facility and equipment maintenance, modification, modernization or purchase
  • Provides budget input to President and maximizes return on labor and equipment
  • Ensures technician adherence to, and compliance with, laboratory Operating Procedures and Safety policy
  • Performs other similar or related duties as required or requested

Position Requirements:

The Laboratory Manager must possess the minimum knowledge listed below:

  • Bachelor degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology with minimum 3 years relevant experience, or
  • Associates degree in applicable field with minimum 6 years relevant experience, or
  • Ten years HVAC laboratory experience
  • Ability to use computer software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • AS400 (or equivalent experience) a plus
  • Familiarity with HVAC industry, manufacturing processes and technology a plus
  • Experience with UL 555/555S, AMCA 500-D and/or AMCA 500-L desired
  • Proven leadership and demonstrated proficiency in supervising and motivating personnel
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to interact with customers and agency certification personnel
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical and organizational skills
  • Creative, flexible and innovative team player
